Ortelius World Maps

Set of 5 maps. Copper etchings from the Atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" by Abraham Ortelius. Antwerp, 1571. Verso text: Latin. Excellent modern hand coloring in the typical Renaissance style.

This homogenous set derives from an atlas printed in the year 1571. Text with date is on hand. The original atlas, of which this set was a part, was a very early edition of the famous first atlas ever printed. Unfortunately earlier possessors removed 12 maps of various countries from the book, making the atlas hopelessly incomplete.

These extremely early editions of the Ortelius atlas had always very narrow margins. They had little space given beyond the plate mark. In order to give them ample margin surroundings, the margins have been expertly widened where necessary.

Copper etching by Johann Zahn. Nuremberg 1696. Hand-colored. (Shirley 583)

This map was originally issued by Athanasius Kircher S.J. in the year 1675. It was the first world map showing the ocean currents, the abysses in the oceans and the vulcanos of the earth. Kircher's map was rather unadorned. Zahn, a philosopher and a Premonstratensian monk at Wuerzburg, published this map in his „Mundis Mirabili" in the year 1696. Its mark of distiction was the enormously adorned title cartouche with cherubs holding a decorative florid pediment. The volcanos are shown as red and yellow flames.

"Geography"

Copper etching from " A Gentleman's Recreation"
by Richard Blome (active 1669-1705). Published in 1678.
Fine modern hand coloring.

Here we have a fine abstraction from what we are used to when looking at world maps. This one is embedded into BlomeÔs idea of "Geography", a playful assembly of bits and pieces relating to measuring the world nearby and as a whole. The two-globe world map in the center shows California as an island, welcomed by collectors of this particularity in map making. At the bottom we find ourselves looking into a globe makerÔs workshop. An interesting and in more than one way special piece!

The following copper etchings are from the "Atlas Marianus" by P. Heinrich Scherer, S.J.

Designed by Johannes Degler and expertly etched by Joseph à Montaglegre of Nuremberg (the Italian one by Jacob Muller of Augsburg) these interesting original copper engravings in the "Atlas Marinus" which devoted allegorical attention to sea-going nations at a time when much of the world had been disvovered and Europeans were swarming out like bees to learn details of hitherto unknown continents, taking possessions and bringing back whatever was new to them as well as not only taking blessings to the people they met on their adventures. Pater Heinrich Sherer S.J. (1628 - 1704), a professor of mathematics and a cartographer in Munich published this beautiful atlas in 1703.

Every print is showing both, the achievements of the described people and the places in the world which they had conquered. An Englishman holding a map of New England under his arm, sails set for Brazil and India (Portugal), Spaniards setting out for Mexico and Peru, etc. etc. Your eyes do not tire of discovering hints in charmingly baroque alligorical cartouches.

All prints are in superb printing quality. Left margins have some light fraying from binding. All prints have some offsetting in margins. Margins are 1-2 cm wide. Image sizes vary slightly and are given below.
